Pet insurance

Pet insurance works differently from the rest of what we place: you pay the vet, then the plan reimburses you a percentage after the deductible. There is no network, so you keep your own vet. What separates a good plan from a cheap one is almost always how it treats pre-existing conditions and whether the payout is capped per incident, per year, or per lifetime.

What this coverage generally includes

  • Accidents: broken bones, swallowed objects, lacerations
  • Illness: infections, cancer, diabetes, hereditary conditions
  • Diagnostics: X-rays, MRI, bloodwork, ultrasound
  • Surgery, hospitalisation and prescription medication
  • Optional wellness plans for vaccinations, dental and routine exams
  • Multi-pet arrangements

What we will ask you

  • Species, breed and age of each pet
  • Any conditions they have already been treated for
  • Whether you want accident-only or accident and illness
  • The reimbursement percentage and annual limit you have in mind

Worth knowing

  • Pre-existing conditions are excluded by every plan we have seen. Enrolling while a pet is young and healthy is the whole game.
  • Almost every plan has a waiting period, and some have a longer one for orthopaedic conditions.
  • You pay the vet and get reimbursed. The plan does not pay the clinic directly, so the money still has to leave your account first.

Descriptions of coverage on this site are general summaries for information only. They are not an offer of insurance, not a contract, and not a guarantee of coverage or price. Only the policy issued by the insurance company determines what is covered. Coverage, availability, discounts and eligibility vary by carrier and by applicant and are subject to underwriting.
