Life insurance

Life insurance is the one line where the question is not what something costs to replace but what an income is worth over the years it would have been earned. We start from the obligations that would outlive you — a mortgage, childcare, income replacement, final expenses — and work back to a number, rather than starting from a premium and seeing what it buys.

What this coverage generally includes

  • Term life, typically 10, 15, 20 or 30 years
  • Whole life and other permanent cover
  • Final expense policies
  • Riders: accelerated death benefit, waiver of premium, child riders
  • Mortgage protection sized to the balance and the term
  • Key person and buy-sell cover for a business

What we will ask you

  • Who depends on your income, and for how long they would need to
  • Your mortgage balance and any other debt that would not disappear
  • Any cover you already have through work, and whether it is portable
  • Your general health, and whether you use tobacco

Worth knowing

  • Group cover through an employer usually ends when the job does, and it is rarely enough on its own.
  • Term is far cheaper than permanent for the same death benefit. Which is right depends on how long the need lasts, not on which is cheaper.
  • Most policies need a health questionnaire, and some need a medical exam. Rates are better the younger and healthier you are when you apply.

Descriptions of coverage on this site are general summaries for information only. They are not an offer of insurance, not a contract, and not a guarantee of coverage or price. Only the policy issued by the insurance company determines what is covered. Coverage, availability, discounts and eligibility vary by carrier and by applicant and are subject to underwriting.
